Miracles of Nature - S02:E05 - Naturally Enigmatic
Today we will visit three remarkable nooks of Europe in search of miracles of nature. To begin with, we will venture into Austria's Salzburg region. An area that is famous for its Alps and Tauern mountains but also because it is the birth place of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. After that, we will move over to the south western outpost of the old continent, to Portugal's Algarve region. To conclude, we will admire Corsica, the French island of beauty.
Many islands lie in the sea between Great Britain and Scandinavia. All of these islands would have remaind snow-covered and life would not have been sustainable were it not for the Gulf Stream. The warm waters flowing through the Atlantic Ocean all the way to South America account for the mild island climate, rich nature and history that reaches back thousands of years. Such are the three islands we are about to visit in today’s Miracles of Nature – Vesterålen, the Fair Isle and the Orkneys.
Zimbabwe was initially Southern Rhodesia and lies to the south of the Victoria Falls along the river Zambezi. Zambia was initially Northern Rhodesia and lies on the other bank of the river. Zimbabwe is a landlocked country in the south-east of Africa. It borders with South Africa to the south. According to archaeologists, the earliest records indicate that first human settlements in this area reach back to the 3rd century.
We journey in search of incredible miracles of nature begins on the Canary Islands. Lanzarote is of a volcanic origin. Volcanic activity created a fantastical landscape, similar to that on Mars. On Gran Canarias we will witness a traditional harvest of a crop that has been brought to the rest of the world from here - sugarcane. We will wrap up this episode in the Moroccan province of Gulemin, a home to a nomadic tribe whose inseparable companions are camels.
Venture into the Mexican seaside state of Veracruz in the south-west of the country and admire the unbelievable colours of locally grown orchids. Find out how vanilla is grown and discover how brown sugar is made. To top things off, witness an extraordinary ritual. Later, we will visit the Cayman Islands in the Caribbean. The three islands are relatively small but are inhabited by some remarkable animals including sea turtles, friendly rays and other types of fish as well as fascinating blue iguanas.

In the rain forests of the Seychelles we encounter remarkable fauna and flora. Then on to Mauritius. Where the symbol of the cruel and inconsiderate colonization of Africa is the extinct Dodo bird. We conclude today’s episode in the very heart of Africa, in the only place on the planet where close relatives to humans, the mountain gorillas - live. The country is the Democratic Republic of Congo and the province we shall visit is South Kivu.
Bolivia is a country of countless fascinating natural sights. We will begin on the high plateau of Altiplano, stopping by the world’s largest salt lake.Later, we will descend a few thousand meters using the road of death to the Los Yungas province. And then on to the shores of lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world.
Zambia, the Latvian region of Kurzeme, the Georgian provinces of Kakheti and Svaneti, seem to have very little in common. They lie in Africa, Europe and on the borderline between Europe and Asia respectively. Kakheti and Svaneti are both a part of Georgia but very unlike one another. So where is the connection? How are these regions similar?
In this episode we visit two different corners of our planet. Although thousands of kilometres apart, spiritually they are close relatives. First, Ethiopia in East Africa which is dissected by the Great African Rift Valley and considered by many to be the cradle of humankind. Next, a paradise on Earth: Jamaica.
Today‘s journey in search of more miracles of nature brings us to the Masurian Lake District which is an impressive water world in north-eastern Poland. We will then trade in the cool Baltic region for tropical Caribbean. Here we will prove that it would be wrong to link the Cuban province of Guantanamo only with the famous American naval base. To wrap things up, we will return to Europe’s Mediterranean region to visit people of the Lipari Islands who continue to survive in the shade of ever-smouldering volcanoes.
In this episode we visit places where people haven’t had it easy. Despite the hardships they experience daily, they choose to stay and shape their destiny. Bamiyan – a poverty stricken Afghan province, mercilessly tested by time. Niğde – a Turkish province with striking history. And Patagonia – the rough land at the very end of the world.
Thailand is one of the few countries in south-east Asia that has never been a European colony. Perhaps the word “thai” which means “free” has something to do with it. It is possibly the reason why this country evokes a certain magic that sets it apart from the surrounding countries. From Thailand we travel to Sri Lanka.
